I called Tony Bittner, turns out he not only built the engine that is presently in JS65 but was also the owner of the boat for about 5 years while he lived in the W. Palm area. The history as far as he can recall is this:
|
Scotty Scott, W. Palm area purchased the boat and stuffed it in the ocean. |
|
Tony purchased from Scotty in the late seventies. He built the outrageous 350 that is in it now. Only used the boat to terrorize the other folks on the lake. Both Scotty and Tony were drag and boat racers. Tony claimed the boat was way over powered and he never took it to the limits of the engine. |
|
Bob Hogan, W. Palm, purchased from Tony in Dec. 1983. Hogan used the boat for pleasure, no official racing. Boat sat for a number of years prior to being sold. |
|
I bought from Bob Hogan in the fall of 2001. |
Neither
Bob nor Tony knew the original history of the boat. Scotty must have known but
he died a couple of years ago. Tony presently lives in Waynesboro, Pa. and is
still very much involved with drag racing and boat racing. He's 65 and going
strong. Fun guy to talk with.

The JS65 was
built by Robert and Connie Cottrell in the early months of 1970 and was ready to
race that spring. They borrowed a mold from their friend Bud Bender and laid the
hull up in their garage in Highlands, NJ. The original deck was home made and
cover in a flowery lace cloth. That deck has since been replaced with a
fiberglass one of Bender design.
This was the second Skiff to be raced by the Cottrell's and was built to come in
at about seven pounds above the minimum class weight.
Present power is a direct drive 355 C.I. Chevy. Horsepower is estimated to be
450+.
It's to much, that's for sure!
